Acropolis Restoration Service

The Acropolis Restoration Service (YSMA) is a special peripheral service of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, established in 1999 in order to organize and carry out the works of conservation and restoration on the Athenian Acropolis (for further information see: http://www.ysma.gr/en/service). The website, regularly updated, is an important archive containing figures, graphic documentation and photographs, concerning on-going and previous works. A special section (http://acropolis-gis.ysma.gr) is dedicated to the Acropolis GIS and contains documentation regarding the whole Acropolis and the wall, both from inside and outside perspective, and a laser-scanner view of the Erechtheum. At page http://www.ysma.gr/static/files/Newsletter_10_eng.pdf it is also possible to download “Modern technologies in the restoration of the Acropolis, Proceedings of a one-day conference, 19 March 2010” in .pdf format.

American Academy in Rome. Digital Collections

The database collects a selection of more than 4.000 figures of the photographic archive of the American Academy in Rome. In addition to photographs related to archaeological and artistic heritage, especially regarding Rome and the American archaeological excavations at Cosa, there are plans and sections (see, for instance, the Regia Collection). It is possible to use the guided search, organized on the basis of collection, subject and photographer’s name.
By clicking on the link http://www.dvstudios.it/aa/index.html it is possible to visualize an interesting reconstruction of ancient Rome, accessible as a virtual tour, composed by photographic documents and drawings by Giuseppe Gatteschi (1866-1935) that are preserved in the American Academy in Rome’s archives.

Ancient World Mapping Center

The Ancient World Mapping Centre is an interdisciplinary Research Centre at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The website, which includes the Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World as well, contains a huge collection of digital maps freely downloadable in several formats, also in high resolution version, that can be used for educational or research purposes.

Archivi Fotografici Alinari

Fratelli Alinari archive contains documents regarding Italian, European and worldwide art, history, landscape, industries and society, ranging from the second half of XIX century to current period. The archive has further been enlarged by including of materials coming from Anderson, Brogi, Chauffourier, Fiorentini and Mannelli archives and other collections and currently contains 4.000.000 images, among which there are many figures related to archaeological and historical-artistic themes. The figures of the works of art owned by the Italian State are available thanks to the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities’ permission.
In addition to property images, there are documents from Representation offices of Italian and foreign archives, for a total of 45.000.000 photographs: Alinari has in fact been in charge of the photographic properties of Luce Institute and of some photographs of the Photographic Archive of Italian Touring Club. Thanks to special agreements, the following documents are now represented or managed: the photographic collection of the Réunion des Musées Nationaux, the Roger Viollet archive, the Courtauld Institute archive, the Marburg archive, the Bridgeman/Giraudon archive, the Interfoto archive, the Rizzoli archive, the Artothek archive, the Finsiel archive, the Imagno archive, the Topfoto archive, the Bildarchiv Monheim archive, the Ullstein-Bild archive, the Rai Teche archive, the Ansa archive, the Franco Cosimo Panini archive, the Africanpictures archive, the AISA archive, the SDZ archive and the DEA – De Agostini archive.

The Photographical Archive of the British School at Rome includes more than 100.000 prints and negatives. The selection contains a huge collection of XIX century photographs and also more recent ones, such as the Parker collection or the Ward Perkins properties.

The website collects a remarkable gallery of images (27.000), often in high-resolution format, of Turkish archaeological sites and museums, created by Dick Ossenam. Particularly, it is worth mentioning the page dedicated to the Istanbul Archaeological Museum (http://www.pbase.com/dosseman/archaeological_museum_istanbul). The website has been recently enlarged thanks to the inclusion of 6.000 images of Syrian sites with historical and artistic relevance and will soon include images of Italy, starting from Rome.

Early Photography in Greece and the Mediterranean

“These little-known images contribute substantially to the history of photography in Greece and the role of photography in the reception of Greek culture by European and American audiences”. The Getty Research Institute includes, among its digitals resources, the Gary Edwards photographical collection, including more than 1.000 photographs concerning Greek archaeological monuments and sites, taken between 1839 and 1959. Through the archive of images it is possible to follow the archaeological excavation processes, as well as urban landscape change and alteration affecting ancient monuments.

The website is a precious instrument for students, educators, scholars and anyone interested in the study of Art History.

Lazio Region Museums’ office created the IDRA database, collecting archeological data concerning items preserved in more than 40 museums in Lazio, except those of Rome Municipality. Archaeological finds, ranging from Prehistoric period to Renaissance, are provided with figures and information (dimension, finding place, national identification number-NCTN, bibliography, etc.). Search can be done on the basis of type of object, museum, finding place, period, material, national identification number.
