Recent scholarship perpetuates an underestimation of the oral information Pausanias relied on. The focus is still on the on which Wilamowitz’s criticism was based. In fact, in the Periegesis the individuation of the main elements and meaning of the narrative system is certainly based on the acquisition and communication of the information during Pausanias’ travels. The aim of the present essay is to investigate specifically this attitude of field research of Pausanias, as part of his methodology of writing, and to reconstruct the roots of Wilamowitz’s prejudice, which persists in spite of everything.
