The monument preserves the ruins of the domus revealed in Laurenzi’s excavation, upon which an attempt was made to identify and reconstitute the morphological features of the “Casa Romana” in a generalized reconstructive intervention during the period of Italian rule of Dodecanese. Aim of a recent study has been to rehabilitate the monument in terms of conservation and consolidation of its structural elements. In addition, in the same project the architectural and decorative characteristics of “Casa Romana” have been underscored and an attempt has been made to enhance the edifice in the monumental complex of the western archaeological zone of Kos.

With the paper “Criteria of structural supplementation in the restoration of the monuments of the Athenian Acropolis. Methodological problems and design choices” there will be a discussion of the criteria on the basis of which the procedure of supplementing the architectural members is decided. After a brief historical presentation of the previous restoration projects and a brief examination of the restoration principles followed today, these criteria are grouped in five main categories taking as an example the Propylaia restoration. These categories are illustrated with characteristic examples from the interventions at the Propylaia in the last ten years, through which both the methodological problems and the design choices emerge.

.
An extended restoration program of the Athenian Acropolis monuments has been in progress since 1975. The project is carried out by the Hellenic Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, Culture and Sports in order to alleviate the effects of serious problems due to natural causes (i.e. earthquakes) or human activities (i.e. fires, bombardments or earlier restorations). The interventions are complied with the spirit of the “Charter of Venice” and follow the principle of reversibility. Effort focuses on keeping the original construction form of the monuments. New marble is used for supplements only to ensure the structural stability of the buildings, while iron clamps and dowels are being replaced by reinforcements made of titanium. The authentic reliefs and sculptures are removed and transferred to the Acropolis Museum and replaced by casts in artificial stone. Scattered architectural fragments recognized as belonging to the monuments are reset in their original or a corresponding position. The paper focuses on the recent intervention programs on the projects underway at the Propylaia and the Parthenon.

Some Italian MIBAC (Italian Minister for cultural heritage) memoranda apply to the archaeological sites the same seismic rules used for buildings. That appears incorrect because the state of ruin is subject to a quite different use, but also has the peculiar needs of conservation. Starting from the idea that the “archaeological built heritage” has an artistic or monumental standing and it may also represent a simple attestation of aspects of human activity in the past, this paper suggests a different cultural attitude aimed to simultaneously respect the safety of visitors and avoid actions disrespectful of the material history of the ancient built.

The restoration of the temples of Paestum was carried out following an interdisciplinary project designed by Alessandra Melucco Vaccaro and Giuliana
Tocco, according to which the restoration must also provide for the subsequent maintenance. The work, financed by the resources of the Investment
Facility for Employment (FIO) and directed by the Author during the period 1995-2000, was preceded by preliminary investigations by the Central
Institute of Restoration and allowed to direct the executive project on the three temples, identifying the causes of deterioration and, in large lines, the
conservative treatments to be taken. The result was the definition of a “protocol for the preservation of buildings and archaeological areas”, in those years
rather innovative, which still has a great significance, since the restoration of the buildings was not the result of a single specialist, neither the arithmetic
sum of the contributions of different disciplines, it is instead the result of a choral ensemble

.
The project of redesigning and enhancing the archaeological site of the Lindos Acropolis began in 2001, within the context of the restoration works of the monuments carried out by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The most important problems that had to be confronted concerned the visitors pathways through the monument (up to 2500 visitors daily), and the existing difficulty in identifying smaller monuments, like anathimata (offerings to the gods) and inscriptions found scattered all around the place since the time of the excavations.
What became a necessity in order to implement the study was the composition of an accurate designing site plan and the recording of every scattered stone findings (about 2000). This recording enabled the identification of 421 inscribed stones with the list produced by the archaeologists who had excavated the site and also the location and association of more than 113 unpublished sections with architectural and votive monuments of the site.
The goals of the redesigning and enhancing project were the following:
– To optimize the routes the visitors followed and help them recognize the monuments of the site by following specific pathways.
– T o protect and promote the smaller monuments of the archaeological site.
– To protect and highlight the scattered material by classifying it.
The study has been approved by the Hellenic Central Archeological Council (KAS) in 2006 and realized during the period of 2006-2009.
