Negli studi, sopravvive una sottovalutazione dell’informazione orale utilizzata da Pausania; il focus continua ad essere concentrato sulla Quellenforschung su cui erano basate le critiche di Wilamowitz. In realtà, nella Periegesi il peso della comunicazione orale e dell’interazione con l’informazione locale nel contatto col territorio è fondamentale. Il contributo indaga specificamente l’attitudine pausaniana alla ricerca sul campo come parte costitutiva del suo metodo compositivo, e mira a ricostruire le radici del pregiudizio wilamowitziano, in qualche misura oggi ancora vivo.

Recent scholarship perpetuates an underestimation of the oral information Pausanias relied on. The focus is still on the on which Wilamowitz’s criticism was based. In fact, in the Periegesis the individuation of the main elements and meaning of the narrative system is certainly based on the acquisition and communication of the information during Pausanias’ travels. The aim of the present essay is to investigate specifically this attitude of field research of Pausanias, as part of his methodology of writing, and to reconstruct the roots of Wilamowitz’s prejudice, which persists in spite of everything.
