Depuis les premières découvertes importantes de figurines en terre cuite dans le courant du xixe siècle, la recherche sur cette catégorie d’objets archéologiques a connu une évolution remarquable. Considérées tout d’abord et pendant longtemps comme des bibelots, et de ce fait étudiées surtout du point de vue de l’histoire de l’art, les terres cuites figurées sont désormais traitées et publiées de manière scientifique, selon des méthodes d’analyse spécifiques. Pourtant à ce jour, il n’existe encore aucun manuel sur la coroplathie antique destiné aux étudiants et aux chercheurs, d’où l’idée de la mise en place d’une collaboration internationale pour former un projet de création d’outils de travail désormais devenus indispensables dans les études coroplathiques. Les pages suivantes présentent les grandes lignes de ce projet collectif qui comprend d’une part la rédaction et la publication d’un manuel, et d’autre part la constitution et la mise en ligne d’une base de données réunissant tous les types de figurines connus à ce jour.

Since the first important discoveries of terracotta figurines in the xixth century, the research on this category of archaeological objects knew a significant changing. At first and for a long time, the figurative terracottas were considered like trinkets, and therefore were studied especially from point of view of the art history. Now they are treated and published in a scientific way, with specific methods. Yet to date, there is no manual on the coroplastic studies for students and scholars. From there, was born the thought of an international collaboration to form a proposal to create some working tools now essential for coroplastic studies. In the following pages will be presented the outlines of this collective project including the drafting of a manual and of a database, put on-line, including all types of figurines known up to now.
